MYTH # 1 IF YOU PULL ONE GRAY HAIR OUT, TWO WILL GROW IN

If you notice a gray hair growing do not pull it out as it can damage the hair follicle thus taking longer to regenerate. However, if you do pull it out, don’t be alarmed, as two white hairs will not grow back in its place. If this were the case it would be an excellent way to grow thicker hair. Sadly it’s not. What simply happens is that by the time the hair has grown back in, another gray one has grown right beside it.

MYTH # 2 GRAY HAIR IS COARSER THAN OTHER HAIR

The oil in our hair gets reduced as we age and this can give the appearance of coarser or wiry hair. But in fact gray hair is not coarser. Hair gets finer as we age, gray or no gray.

MYTH # 3 CUT YOUR HAIR TO MAKE IT GROW FASTER

Unlike pruning a tree your hair will not stimulate new growth if you cut it. However because the ends are usually lacking the fullness and volume of the top of the head, a nice trim will give the appearance of thicker, stronger hair.

MYTH # 4 100 BRUSH STROKES A DAY KEEPS THE BALDNESS AWAY

Contrary to popular belief over-brushing of hair can cause fraying and breakage, or worse, it can scratch the scalp and damage the follicle, which slows down healthy hair regrowth.

MYTH # 5 A COLD RINSE WILL MAKE YOUR HAIR SHINIER

It’s the reverse. Cold water renders the hair lifeless! Cold rinses constrict the blood flow into the capillaries of the scalp, which carry vital nutrients to each follicle. It’s the job of conditioners to close the cuticle and make the hair look shiny.

MYTH # 6 HAIR PRODUCTS LABELED 'NATURAL' OR ‘ORGANIC’ ARE HEALTHIER

Despite good intent many ‘natural’ products contain hidden preservatives, fragrances and other ingredients that disregard the rules of nature. This is because many of their formulators and manufacturers are not themselves students of nature and have never taken a course in green chemistry or toxicology. Be mindful that in order for a product to be labeled ‘organic’ the formula only need contain a very small amount of organic material. Look for companies that disclose all of their ingredients in plain site and always refer to the EWG’s SkinDeep® database when in doubt.

MYTH # 7 WEARING A HAT WILL CAUSE HAIR LOSS

On the contrary the heat generated may accelerate hair growth. However if you do tend to pull your hair in tight braids or buns the friction that the hat could generate may indeed create more stress on the follicle and pull hair out.
