YOUR HAIR’S NATURAL DENSITY
We all have unique hair characteristics. Some of us have a visible curl, others a natural straight sleek look. What’s makes our hair beautiful is so diverse.
In this months blog we look at how to determine your hair density and what products work best for you.
How To Measure Hair Density
Hair density is a measurement of how much hair you have on your head, or how densely packed your hair follicles are on your scalp. Density impacts the volume and shape of your hair as a whole, so it affects what products you should use and how best to style your hair.
This DIY method of measuring hair density gives you a general guideline:
Brush your hair and tie it into a tight ponytail. Use a tape measure to measure the circumference of the ponytail. If the circumference is less than 2 inches, you have low-density hair. If you measure 2-3 inches you have medium density hair, and if you measure 4 or more inches you have high-density hair.
LOW-DENSITY HAIR means that you’ll have less volume relative to others so it’s best to avoid heavy products that weigh the hair down. With low-density hair you want to reduce the amount of products you use overall and just focus on the condition of the scalp. Make sure to keep your scalp clean and free from product buildup. Using Elixir No.3 will also do wonders and help stimulate follicle growth. Other go-to products are of course those that enhance volume but are lightweight, like mousses.
MEDIUM HAIR DENSITY is the easiest to work with and responds well to a range of products and hairstyles. Our Kelp Shampoo is ideal for this type of hair. The focus here is keeping the hair conditioned properly. At Hairprint we love to switch it up and use the conditioner first. Leave it on for 10+ minutes and then shampoo just the roots. It helps to keep your type of hair well hydrated and full of bounce.
If you are blessed with High DENSITY hair you get to play with volume and full-bodied hairstyles. The best products for you are thicker and richer in nature. The ritual of Oiling The Hair once a week is key to detangle, reduce excess volume and keeps your hair properly hydrated. Using heavy products like butters and leave-in’s are also great options. Look at our Hair Oils and alternative between using Amla Oil and Nutritive Oil for best results.
For aa textured-hair keep in mind that your hair density interacts with your porosity and curl pattern and that makes your hair unique. This means some of what is written above might not apply. For example: if you have low density, high porosity hair, you’ll have to find a balance between avoiding heavy products that weigh down your hair. The Hairprint Color Restorer will truly enhance your natural curl, soften the hair texture, strengthen your hair, and you can use this product whether you have are graying or not.
